Abstract Virtual Private Network (VPN) is an essential piece of equipment for ensuring secure communications over public networks, and aids users secure their connection to a public network. This paper will explain the various security protocols that can be implemented and how these can be used on the current network architecture using a VPN. As VPNs play a crucial role in ensuring communication security on an insecure network, part one of the paper outlines a description of VPNs. Part two of the paper tells a little history about VPN technology, starting from the old days of IPSec, SSL/TLS and continuing to today's technology, such as Wireguard and QUIC. In part three, the various technologies and characteristics that make each type of technology safe, efficient and appropriate for each type of network is described. Last but not least, the authors provide practical, real-world examples of using VPNs in today's applications: Remote access, Site to site, Securing Data Being Sent Over Cloud Based Services. Therefore, VPNs play a critical function in developing a safe communication network in today's digital society.
